For decades, facial ageing has been explained through a relatively simple equation: collagen declines, elastin weakens, fat pads shift, bone density decreases. The skin loses its firmness, gravity takes over, and the face gradually descends. It is a narrative that has shaped an entire industry, from injectables to skincare, and while it is certainly true, it is also incomplete.

It is a living, moving network of more than forty muscles, each one responding to every emotion you experience, every conversation you have, every stressful commute, every sleepless night and every unconscious habit repeated thousands of times over the course of your life.

In other words, your face doesn’t only age.

It adapts.

Most of us never stop to think about the fact that our facial muscles are working almost constantly. Even when we’re not speaking, smiling or eating, they are reacting to our internal state. Anxiety tightens the jaw. Concentration furrows the brow. Stress elevates the shoulders, alters breathing and subtly changes the position of the head and neck. None of these reactions are problematic in themselves, they are part of a perfectly healthy nervous system, but they become significant when they stop being temporary and start becoming our default.

The body, after all, is remarkably efficient. If a muscle is asked to contract hundreds of times a day for years, it gradually accepts that position as its new normal.

This is why so many people have no idea they are clenching their jaw until someone asks them to relax it, and they realise they can’t.


Perhaps nowhere is this more evident than in the lower face.

The masseter, one of the primary muscles responsible for chewing, is also one of the strongest muscles in the entire human body relative to its size. Modern life asks far more of it than simply chewing food. We grind our teeth during sleep. We clench during meetings. We brace unconsciously while answering emails, driving in traffic or scrolling through our phones.

Over time, these muscles can become chronically overactive.

For some people, this contributes to headaches, jaw discomfort or symptoms associated with temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ). For others, it simply creates a face that appears heavier, tighter or more fatigued than it actually is. The muscles are doing exactly what they’ve been trained to do—they’re just never being given permission to stop.

This is where the conversation becomes particularly interesting.

Unlike the muscles in your arms or legs, many facial muscles attach directly into the skin rather than into bone. They exist primarily to create expression. Every smile, every squint and every raised eyebrow is translated almost instantly onto the surface of the face. Over decades, repeated muscular activity contributes to the lines and folds that eventually become part of our resting appearance.

This is why two people of the same age can have remarkably different faces despite similar genetics: one may appear soft and open, the other permanently tense.

The nervous system plays an equally important role.

When we experience stress, the sympathetic nervous system, the body’s “fight or flight” response, becomes more active. Heart rate increases, breathing becomes shallower, and muscles throughout the body prepare for action. Evolution designed this response to help us survive immediate danger.

The problem is that modern stress rarely lasts ten minutes, it lasts months, sometimes years.

The body, however, doesn’t distinguish particularly well between escaping a predator and answering forty work emails before lunch. Physiologically, both situations can maintain a higher baseline level of muscular tension if recovery never truly occurs.

This helps explain why emotional stress often has such a visible physical expression. The face is simply one of the places where the nervous system writes its autobiography.


Interestingly, many of the changes people describe as looking “tired” have surprisingly little to do with the skin itself.

Restricted tissue mobility can make facial movements appear less fluid. Tight muscles can influence posture, particularly through the neck and shoulders, subtly changing how the head is carried. Reduced movement may also coincide with less efficient local circulation and lymphatic flow, contributing to the feeling, or appearance, of heaviness and puffiness.

None of this means that massage reverses ageing or permanently repositions facial tissues. Biology is more complex than that.

What it can do is address something remarkably simple that is often overlooked: muscles, like minds, sometimes need help letting go.
