Why releasing facial tension comes before sculpting?
When we look at the face, we tend to focus on what we can see: a softer jawline, deeper nasolabial folds, a heavy lower face, tension around the mouth, lines between the eyebrows.
But before trying to sculpt any of these areas, we need to look at what is happening underneath them.
The face contains more than 20 pairs of muscles responsible for expression, chewing and movement. Many facial muscles are unusual because instead of simply attaching bone to bone, they attach partly into the skin and connective tissues. When they contract, they directly move the surface of the face.
This is why muscle tension matters aesthetically.
WHAT IS FACIAL MUSCLE TENSION?
A muscle contracts when it receives a signal from the nervous system. Normally, it contracts when needed and then returns toward its resting state.
The problem is repetitive activation.
Stress, teeth clenching, chewing, squinting, concentrating in front of a screen, pursing the lips and habitual facial expressions can repeatedly activate the same muscles for hours every day.
The masseter is a good example. It is one of the main muscles responsible for closing the jaw. If you regularly clench your teeth, including unconsciously during concentration or sleep, the masseter is repeatedly loaded. Over time, it can become very strong and, in some people, hypertrophied, making the lower face appear wider or heavier.
The same principle applies elsewhere, although not every facial muscle hypertrophies in the same way.
Repeated contraction of the muscles between the eyebrows contributes to the formation of expression lines in that area. Constant activity around the mouth can create a visibly tighter lower face. Tension through the jaw and neck can influence how freely the whole lower face moves.
WHY DOES TENSION CHANGE HOW THE FACE LOOKS?
Muscles create force.
And because facial muscles interact directly with skin, connective tissue and neighbouring muscles, that force is transmitted to the tissues around them.
A chronically active area can therefore look shortened, compressed or simply less relaxed.
This is particularly visible in several zones:
Jaw: excessive masseter activity can make the jaw feel hard and can increase the visual width of the lower face.
Between the eyebrows: repeated contraction of the corrugator muscles pulls the brows inward and contributes to vertical expression lines.
Forehead: repeated activation of the frontalis continually folds the skin horizontally.
Mouth and chin: muscles around the lips and chin can become habitually active, creating a contracted appearance and influencing the way the lower face sits at rest.
Neck: the platysma is a large superficial muscle extending from the upper chest and neck toward the lower face. When activated, it exerts a downward pull on tissues of the lower face and mouth.
This last point is particularly important.
The face is not an isolated structure ending at the jawline. The muscles, fascia and connective tissues of the face continue into the jaw, neck, scalp and upper chest.
This is why working only where you see the problem is rarely enough.
WHY RELEASE BEFORE YOU LIFT?
Because an overactive muscle and a weak or under-recruited muscle are not the same problem.
If an area is already contracting excessively, immediately adding more stimulation is not necessarily what it needs.
First, we want to reduce unnecessary muscular resistance and restore movement. Manual techniques can work through the masseter, temples, forehead, mouth, jaw and neck to reduce the sensation of tightness and temporarily improve tissue mobility.
Only then does it make sense to move into more directional sculpting and stimulation.
This is particularly relevant when combining manual work with technologies such as EMS. Electrical muscle stimulation creates muscular contractions. Before asking a muscle to contract more, we need to understand whether that area needs stimulation in the first place, or whether it is already overactive and needs to be released.
That distinction is fundamental.
AND THIS IS WHY A FACIAL SHOULD NOT BE THE SAME FOR EVERY FACE
Two people can have what appears to be the same concern, for example, a poorly defined jawline, for completely different reasons.
One may have significant fluid retention, another may have a very active masseter, another may have reduced muscle tone, another may have structural changes in skin and facial fat associated with ageing.
And most faces have several of these factors at the same time.
Treating all of them with exactly the same “lifting massage” makes little anatomical sense.
The first step should be to understand the face: where it is tight, where movement is restricted, where muscles are already doing too much and where stimulation may actually be useful.
Then you release, then you sculpt.
Because when working with the face, more contraction does not automatically mean more lift.
Sometimes the first thing a face needs is exactly the opposite.
